The building was completed in 1564 and has served as a home for various causes in the past. In 1993 Hessenhuis Café opened as a hotspot for the LGTBQ-community. Through the years, Hessenhuis Café has become a true landmark in the nightlife scene of Antwerp, for both LGTBQ’s as non-LGTBQ’s. In 2020 the interior was completely redesigned, welcoming visitors in an eclectic yet warm and welcoming environment.
